- Whenever possible, discuss rules, agreements,
and related consequences before problem situations
arise.
- When discussing rules (curfew, household chores,
appropriate language), consider develomental
and community norms as well as personal values.
- Make agreements which are behaviorally specific
enough so that who is going to do what and where
is clear to both parents and teen.
- Make agreements/rules which recognize that
there are alternative ways to act in situations
and that teens have the power and responsibility
to choose among these alternatives.
- Make agreements/rules which clarify the consequences
(positive as well as negative) for choosing
particular alternatives.
- Negotiate consequences which are mutually
determined (between teens and parents) and logical
as possible.
