Tips for a Good School Year - By Roberta Hill, M.S.W., L.C.S.W., L.I.S.A.C.
  • Read!! Have your child read to you. Read to her. Let her write original stories and read them to you. Encourage reading as an every day activity.

  • Give him a journal. Writing his own feelings and ideas will teach him to express his ideas well.

  • Use math in your home. Cooking, grocery shopping and counting money develop comfort with her math skills. An older child can tally the grocery bill or help you comparison shop.

  • Discover your child's learning style. A visual learner may learn better from seeing things pictured while an auditory learner may learn better by reciting or reading his lesson out loud. Some students work better in groups and some work better alone. Some children work better in a quiet environment and some work better while listening to music.

  • Don't allow homework to be a choice. Give the message "Do your homework."

  • Do not schedule family vacations or appointments during school time. Showing up for school consistently and on time forms lifelong habits.

  • Help your child get organized for school. Use a calendar to map out the school year. Give her the necessary supplies and a place to do homework.

  • Enrich your child's education. Take walks, visit museums, talk about the news.

  • Encourage him to ask questions. If you don't know the answer, make it a point to find it together in the library or on the internet.

  • Don't over schedule your child. Children need time to relax since play is also an important learning activity.
