Behavioral Consultation
is client-centered consultation, and a form of service
delivery in which a consultant works with a consultee,
who is responsible for providing direct services
to a client. Consultees can be teachers, parents,
group home staff, habilitation providers, or other
professionals. In this model, both consultant and
consultee are expected to work together collaboratively
to solve a problem.
Based on consultation interviews and systematic
Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) procedures,
our consultants design individualized behavioral
programs for home-based habilitation based on principles
of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). These
plans aim to increase the acquisition of functional
replacement skills while reducing the occurrence
of behaviors that interfere with a person’s
ability to function adequately in their everyday
activities. The following is an outline for the
provision of Behavioral Consultation services. 1.
Problem identification
- Define the problem in behavioral terms
- Identify important environmental conditions
that impact the behavior
- Discuss an overall goal for behavior change
- Establish a procedure for collection of data
2. Problem analysis
- Evaluate the baseline data
- Conduct naturalistic observations
- Determine the function of the behavior (FBA)
3. Design a treatment plan or provide recommendations
- Define the identified problem and related
conditions
- Delineate goals for treatment
- Describe interventions/strategies to address
problem and accomplish goals
- Determine criteria for successful outcomes
of treatment
4. Treatment plan implementation
- Monitor implementation of the intervention
- Provide training to consultee
- Determine need for immediate revisions of
plan
- Continue data collection procedures
5. Treatment plan evaluation
- Evaluate treatment data and determine whether
goals of consultation have been met
- Discuss strategies and tactics regarding
the continuation, modification, or termination,
of the treatment plan
- Discuss strategies for maintenance and generalization
of treatment goal
